1 - General Information

1.1 - What does the Film London Artists' Moving Image Network do?

The Film London Artists' Moving Image Network supports London-based artists working in moving image: whether film, video, digital, animation or new technologies and for installation, cinema, gallery exhibition, the public realm or broadcast. The Network helps artists engage with and benefit from the wide range of services, resources and opportunities that the capital has to offer.

We work in partnership with various organisations to provide: funding, events, seminars, advice, surgeries, residencies, training and workshops. Visit the opportunities section of this site for further information on these events and on the annual London Artists' Film and Video Award (LAFVA).

1.2 - What is Artists' Moving Image work?

Artists' Moving Image is a widely used term to describe the range of artists' practice with the moving image. Moving image is an inclusive term and preferred to film or video as it includes these practices as well as digital arts, new media and installation work. Generally it refers to work made within the context of contemporary fine art as opposed to work made under the context of mainstream cinema or television.

The term is more open and inclusive than previous terms that it can be used to refer to, previous terms include: experimental film, avant-garde film, video art and expanded cinema. It is a broad area it can overlap with various other areas of practice.

1.3 - What is Film London?

Film London is the strategic agency for the film and media sector in London. Film London invests in film production, exhibition and education and in the economic and industry development initiatives across the capital. The agency leads the drive to enhance London's status as a world-class film location.

1.4 - Who works at Film London Artists' Moving Image Network?

The Film London Artists' Moving Image Network team is made up of full time, part time and freelance staff. The team work within the Production department at Film London. The team includes Maggie Ellis - Head of Production at Film London, Rose Cupit - Manager, Rob Hill - Researcher, Pinky Ghundale – LAFVA Producer and Suzanne Reeves - Administrative Assistant. 2 - Funding

2.1 - Does the Film London Artists’ Moving Image Network offer any funding?

Yes. The Film London Artists’ Moving Image Network run the annual London Artists’ Film and Video Award (LAFVA). The awards are from £2,000 up to a maximum of £20,000 for Production and Completion applications. Awards are intended for fully developed projects with a realisable exhibition and distribution plan.

2.2 - Does the Film London Artists’ Moving Image Network provide any other funding?

LAFVA is the sole annual award run by Film London Artists’ Moving Image Network. For information about other funding available to artists working with the moving image see the funding section of the website.

2.3 - Who can apply to LAFVA?

LAFVA is an open submission awards scheme for artists' living and working in the London region. Awards are available to artists' working in the context of contemporary fine art moving image practice and producing work intended for exhibition in galleries, festivals, specialist venues and as site specific installations. The website contains extensive information and listings tailored to all the needs of artists working with the moving image. The information on the website is in two sections: information for artists working with the moving image and the information about the Film London Artists’ Moving Image Network’s funding schemes and activities.

There is extensive information about contemporary art practice in the critical context section of the website. This section include listings of the many print and online visual arts and cinema publications, as well as DVD and video companies.

You can find information about all aspects of making a new work in the making work section. This section covers all areas relevant to the production of a new piece of work, as well as extensive information on funding and legal issues.

3.4 - Where do I find information about showing work?

You can find information about the options open to you to show your work in the showing work section. This section is dedicated to the exhibition of artists' work and includes a sections on galleries, independent cinemas and film festivals.
