LAFVA 2007

Date posted: 03.04.2007

The London Artists’ Film and Video Awards (LAFVA) for 2007 have now been announced and this year twelve London-based artists will share a total fund of £160,000 to produce new film and video work.

This year’s awardees, who will each receive up to £20,000 for their proposed projects, are: Anja Kirschner, Pil and Galia Kollectiv, Suki Chan, Anna Lucas, Karen Mirza and Brad Butler, Ben Rivers, Michael Landy, Saskia Olde Wolbers, Marine Hugonnier, Susanna Wallin, Mark Boulos and Michael Curran.

Now in its seventh year, the London Artists’ Film and Video Awards support established, mid-career and emerging artists living and working in the London region. The scheme is unique in the diversity of work that it represents.

Supported by Film London in partnership with Arts Council England, the awards support projects ranging from multi screen gallery installations to single screen work for festivals, from feature length films to shorts of a couple of minutes; from films using hand processed celluloid to computer generated animation.

Works are produced on 35mm, 16mm, Super 8, HD, DV and slides, with awardees coming from fine art, digital media, experimental film, photography and choreography backgrounds. The range of approaches and practices represented by the scheme reflects London’s rich history as a hot bed for ground-breaking moving image practice.

144 applications to the LAFVA scheme were received this year. The LAFVA works are selected by external assessors. The pre-selection panel was made up of; Karen Alexander, freelance consultant; Jacqui Davies, Co-Director, animate!; Lucy Reynolds, LUXonline and freelance curator; and Pinky Ghundale, freelance producer, LAFVA. The final decision panel consisted of: Josephine Lanyon, Director, Picture This; Iwona Blaswick, Director, Whitechapel Art Gallery; Gareth Evans, Editor, Vertigo Magazine; Keith Piper, artist, previous LAFVA awardee; and Georgina Starr, artist and previous LAFVA awardee.

"LAFVA is now 7 years old and it is gratifying to see that artists' films are increasingly attracting more attention and audiences. It is always a privilege to support talented groups of artist film-makers and this year's awardees are no exception. We are excited by the range of artists and films in the 2007 slate and the variety of approaches and practices involved. We look forward to seeing the work successfully exhibited across a wide range of platforms, nationally and internationally." Maggie Ellis, Head of Production
