  • One to One Advice Sessions*

    Film London Artists' Moving Image Network's latest programme of developmental one to one advice sessions is now open for applications.

    Up to six artists will be selected to take part in a programme of three to four bespoke sessions which will be scheduled from March to May 2007. Artists are invited to apply specifying particular areas of focus that they feel would best serve to develop their career and practice.

    The application deadline is Wednesday 28 February.

  • Carol Morley at the National Film Theatre*

    On Tuesday 13 February (6.30pm, NFT3) Carol Morley: The Film-making Years presents a selection of rarely seen early works alongside the London premiere of The Madness of the Dance.

    Morley makes provocative films that cross boundaries between fact and fiction, exploring extraordinary things that happen to ordinary people. Her latest film, LAFVA-funded The Madness of the Dance (2006) is a celebration of mass manias and individual obsessions which journeys through an array of bizarre incidents.

    Following the screening Morley will be in discussion with Helen de Witt, Festival Producer at the BFI.

  • Andrew Kötting at the National Film Theatre*

    On Tuesday 27 February (6.30pm) NFT1 will host the London premiere of Andrew Kötting's 2006 LAFVA-funded Offshore (Gallivant).

    Offshore follows a 14hr 17min cross channel relay swim by film-maker Andrew Kötting, his brothers, friends and family. Witnessed by Iain Sinclair and narrated by Eden Kötting the film starts with Kötting's coincidental discovery and hire of the light vessel 'Gallivant', and revisits the original coastline road-movie Gallivant.

    Following the screening Andrew Kötting will be in discussion with writer Iain Sinclair.

  • Fine Art to Film*

    Is fine art film if it's shown in the cinema? How is a film affected by being shown in a gallery? When is an artist an artist and when is she a film-maker? Birds Eye View, in partnership with Film London Artists' Moving Image Network, will explore the increasingly regularly crossed boundary between fine art and film.

    In a panel discussion groundbreaking artists and film-makers, including LAFVA-funded Carol Morley, Clio Barnard and Miranda Pennell, will show extracts of their work. A screening of The Family, an Artists' Moving Image Network supported work from Turner Prize winning Gillian Wearing, will also take place.

    The session which is part of the Birds Eye View Film Festival will take place at 6.30pm, Monday 12 March at the ICA. Further information can be found on the Birds Eye View website.
  • Cabinet Wins At Transmediale

    Tim Shore's 2004 LAFVA- funded short, Cabinet, was announced as joint 2nd place prize winner of the transmediale.07Award at the 20th Transmediale Festival. The ceremony took place on 3 February at Akademie der Künste.

  • Reminder: Old Versus New *

    On Thursday 15 February 2007 (7-9pm) Artists' Moving Image Network, together with Own It, present Old Versus New. This seminar addresses rights and clearances issues associated with the use of archive footage in artists' moving image work.

    The seminar, which takes place at the Whitechapel Gallery, will discuss the burgeoning use of moving image archives, as well as attempting to demystify common copyright issues arising through the use of such material. Guest speakers will include artists Vikki Bennett, Paul Bush, legal expert Sean Egan and Grant Bremner from the BBC Creative Archive.

  • S1/Salon

    The S1/Salon returns with a new season of artist film and video programmes from local, national and international artists. For the first time since its inception in 2003, a panel has selected this year's films from the open call.

    During February and March, S1 Artspace will host three screenings presenting over 20 films featuring work from the UK, USA, Germany, Norway, Stockholm and Vienna.

    The first of the screening programmes entitled 'I Seek You' is on 15 February (7-9pm) and features artist Esther Johnson's 2005 LAFVA-funded film Tune In.
  • Artsadmin Bursaries

    Artsadmin is offering ten research bursaries to artists working in contemporary performance practice and based in the UK. The scheme seeks to support artistic experiment, speculation and play – without emphasis on outcomes or expectation of finished works.

    This year they are offering the residencies through two strands, Roaming: non studio-based 'journeys' and Residencies at Toynbee Studios.

    The deadline for applications is 28 March.

  • Networking Artists' Networks (NAN) Bursaries – Call for Applications

    NAN facilitates exchange, dialogue and collaboration amongst visual artists, whatever their practice and location. Through its programme of bursaries, events and research it offers a focus for networking and feedback promoting the value of artists' initiatives.

    They are looking for applications for two of their bursary programmes. RE-view bursaries and Artists' New Collaborations bursaries.

    Deadline for applications 28 February.

  • Obcy Aktorzy / Foreign Actors Screening

    Obcy Aktorzy / Foreign Actors, a film by LAFVA-funded artist Matthew Noel-Tod, has its London premiere for one weekend only on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 February at the Whitechapel Project Space. There is no charge for admission and screenings take place every hour between 1-6pm.

  • Darkness Visible – Contemporary Art Society Special Collection Scheme

    Darkness Visible is a collaboration between Southampton City Art Gallery and the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull. Containing a selection of contemporary photography, painting and film from both galleries' collections the show explores the darker states of the human psyche.

    The title of the show is inspired by a recent series of works by the artist Jane Bustin. The 5 portraits are seen together for the first time, including the final and long awaited work in the series, a miniature portrait of scientist Dr. Richard Brown.

    Exhibiting artists' include LAFVA funded Graham Gussin, Georgina Starr, and Gillian Wearing who has also been supported by the Artists' Moving Image Network.

    The show runs from 19 January to 1 April at Southampton Art Gallery.
  • Reminder: Film London's Film-makers' Festival Fund

    Film London's Film-makers' Festival Fund (FFF) is open for applications. The fund aims to support the development of moving image artists' and film-makers' careers, by providing travel grants for attendance at a number of overseas festivals where films have been selected and are in competition. The full list of eligible festivals can be downloaded from the Film London website.

    In a number of festivals where films are in competition, contributions are also available towards costs of striking a first film print or production of digital masters where required by the festival for screening.

  • Reminder: IndieLisboa Call for Submissions

    The 4th IndieLisboa International Independent Film Festival will take place from 19 to 29 April, in Lisbon, Portugal. This festival aims to contribute to the discovery of new authors and new trends in the contemporary independent cinema.

    The festival has four main official sections: Observatory (films from independent directors who have more than two films), Laboratory (for more experimental works), Official Competition (for 1st and 2nd films) and IndieJunior (children's film competition).

    They are accepting VHS or DVD (PAL) of short and feature films for selection to these official sections.

    The deadline for submissions is 16 February.

  • And finally…

    On Wednesday 14 February (6pm, British Library Auditorium) CreateKX presents 'Uncharted territories: The Brave New World of Digital Mapping'. Its a celebration of creative and artistic innovation using satellite, mobile and internet technology to transform the world of maps and builds the relationships between places.

    The event will showcase projects like Proboscis' extraordinary Urban Tapestries, and Jen Hamilton and Jen Southern's Running Stitch.
