Suki Chan in Reversing Horizons
Date posted: 23.07.2007
LAFVA-funded artist Suki Chan is one of 30 of Hong Kong’s up and coming contemporary artists chosen to participate in ‘Reversing Horizons’ - an exhibition illustrating through various artwork the cultural developments in Hong Kong since 1997.
Curated by Chang Tsong-zung and Gao Shiming ‘Reversing Horizons’ refers to the shift of ideologies and creative inspiration on account of the handover of Hong Kong in 1997.
In the years before the Handover many Hong Kong people looked to the West for their futures and destinies. This was transformed with the Handover which opened up the possibilities from the East. Reversing Horizons seeks to explore the shift of ideologies and creative inspiration that took place as China became an ever-increasing importance in the lives of Hong Kong residents.
Chan will be showing Interval, a personal journey about shadows and memories, exploring notions of origins and of displacement. Using time-lapse, Chan recorded passages of time within her old ancestral house, now dilapidated in her former village in the New Territories, Hong Kong. The dream-like film conveys the passing of time through a subtle play of light and shadows within interior and exterior spaces. The sequel, Chan’s 2007 LAFVA-funded Interval 2 is currently in production.
The exhibition runs from 8 July to 8 August at Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA Shanghai) in China.
Further information about the show including the full list of artists participating can be found on the MoCA Shanghai website.
