The A to Z of Clearing Rights

Date posted: 18.09.2007

On Wednesday 14 November (6pm – 9pm) FLAMIN and Own It will present a free seminar outlining issues surrounding rights clearance for artists working within the moving image.

What are the implications if you don’t clear pieces of archive or music? Can you still submit to festivals? What happens if you get cinema distribution or a broadcaster  wants to buy your film? Or can you protect your film content from other people stealing your ideas?

Speakers at the event will include:

  •  Roz Mortimer

Roz is an artist and film-maker who lives and works in London. She exhibited internationally as a visual artist before beginning to make films in 1995, and was senior lecturer in film and video at the University of the Arts, before setting up her own production company, Wonderdog Productions in 2001. She has a particular interest in experimental and expanded forms of documentary, and her award winning films have been screened widely around the world in film festivals, galleries, cinema and television.

They include Passages (2007), Invisible (2006), Tales from the Arctic Circle (2005), Safety Tips for Kids (2003), Gender Trouble (2002) and Dog of My Dreams (2001). Her work has been supported by Arts Council England, British Council, Wellcome Trust, Film London, Eastern Arts, Animate, LAFVA, Channel 4 Television and the Rockefeller Foundation.
  • Sean Egan (Bates Wells & Braithwaite)

Sean Egan has been advising arts practitioners for 18 years and combines advice for those working in commercial, as well as subsidised theatre. This involves advising on financing theatre productions including: public offers and arrangements with angels, commissioning agreements and acquiring underlying work, agreements for plays, musicals and operas and creative team agreements, content issues – defamation, privacy and confidentiality – amongst other elements.

Sean also advises on film and television production including award winning film-makers and independent television production companies. He is a frequent speaker and writes regular articles for Arts Professional as well as for The Stage, Scriptwriter Magazine and Prompt. Sean is a trustee of a number of Arts organisations including the Young Vic and the Edinburgh Fringe.
  • Rebecca Knapp

Rebecca has been involved in film and television production for the past ten years, working across Europe, Africa, Canada and the USA. She produced a series of shorts through her production company. These have garnered between them three BAFTA nominations and twenty-four international film awards.

Rebecca was integral in launching and Director of programming/Commercial Director at Rapture Television PLC, a UK-based youth entertainment satellite channel. Earlier this year she set up the UK distribution company Spark Pictures with Daniel M. San. They have just theatrically released their second title MESSAGES (starring Jeff Fahey), a supernatural thriller.

This event for artist film-makers will explain the process of clearing rights such as: archive, music, individuals, licences as well as the organisations you will have to approach. The session will cut through the jargon and use relevant case studies to clearly illustrate the process and help answer your questions.
