FLAMIN Year in Review

Date posted: 28.12.2009

As the year and, rather alarmingly, the decade draws to a close we take a look back on highlights from the past year and glance ahead to FLAMIN’s plans for 2010.

At the beginning of 2009 FLAMIN launched its ambitious new production scheme for London's artist film-makers, FLAMIN Productions - where 12 projects were subsequently developed through an intense programme of workshops and mentoring. The final selected projects will be announced in the New Year and go into production throughout 2010, so watch this space!

This year also saw the completion of a host of new FLAMIN-supported projects with premiere screenings at exhibitions and festivals both internationally and here in London. Highlights included Sarah Turner's mesmerizing FLAMIN-funded feature-length project Perestroika, which premiered at The Times BFI 53rd London Film Festival in October.

FLAMIN-funded works completed in 2009 also included The Otolith Group’s Otolith 11, which was shown at the newly re-opened Showroom Gallery, as part of the artists’ solo exhibition in September. Equally well received was FLAMIN-supported Ben Rivers’ solo show at A Foundation in Liverpool in September, which brought together a selection of Rivers’ enthralling films, including the FLAMIN-funded Ah, Liberty! and Origin of the Species.

Other notable exhibitions of FLAMIN-supported artists included 2008 Jarman Award winner Luke Fowler’s first major UK solo exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery, which opened in May and received glowing reviews. The Serpentine show included Fowler’s four 3 Minute Wonder films, which he was commissioned to produce as winner of the inaugural Jarman Award. The four films premiered on Channel 4 over four consecutive nights in April, in what is a unique opportunity to share artists’ film with a primetime national television audience.

Following the success of the Jarman Award 2008, this year saw the launch of the second round of the award. Lindsay Seers was announced as winner of the 2009 award, the presentation of which was made at a special event at the newly re-opened Whitechapel Gallery in September. Seers is currently working on her commissioned 3 Minute Wonder films, which will be broadcast on Channel 4 in early 2010.

Rachel Reupke, the third artist selected to take part in FLAMIN’s annual Bristol Mean Time programme, embarked on her 3 month production residency in the Autumn and an exhibition of work produced during the residency period will open at Picture This in 2010. The New Year will also see the completion and exhibition of new FLAMIN-supported films by Luciano Zubillaga, Redmond Entwistle and Sara Preibsch.
