ICA Cinema Run for Perestroika
Date posted: 17.08.2010
Following its screening at this year's Edinburgh Film Festival, Sarah Turner's FLAMIN-funded film Perestroika will screen at the ICA cinema from 1 until 16 September.
Exploring the technologies of memory, temporality and loss, Turner's latest film work is an autobiographical documentary, retracing a journey made exactly 20 years previously, in an attempt to come to terms with the death of a close friend.
Hypnotic and haunting imagery and evocative soundscapes draw the viewer into a mysterious space of reflection, caught between past and present. The journey itself - which interweaves footage from the original trip - becomes a metaphor for the process of remembering and re-experiencing.
To celebrate Perestroika's release, the ICA will also host a special panel discussion on 1 September (7.30pm) which will explore how artists' film engages with cinematic conventions, both as an aesthetic practice and a spatial experience.
Speakers include the director Sarah Turner, Chris Darke and David Thorpe with more to be confirmed.
