The Jarman Award 2011 Launches

Date posted: 25.05.2011

Film London and Channel 4, in association with the Whitechapel Gallery, have launched this year's prestigious Jarman Award with the call for nominations. The Award, which will be announced in early October, sees UK artists contending for £10,000 prize money and a broadcast commission.

Following in the footsteps of previous winners Luke Fowler (2008), Lindsay Seers (2009) and Emily Wardill (2010) the winner of the 2011 Film London Jarman Award will be awarded a £10,000 cash prize and Channel 4 broadcast commission.

Now in its fourth year, The Jarman Award remains a unique platform for artist moving image in the UK and is the only Award of its kind where an artist is rewarded with both financial assistance, enabling them to flourish, as well as the opportunity to produce new work which will be broadcast on national television.

Launched in 2008 the Film London Jarman Award gives recognition and support to artists working with the moving image and whose work resists conventional definition, encompassing innovation and excellence. The Award is inspired by visionary avant-garde film-maker Derek Jarman who was one of the most esteemed and controversial artists of the late 20th Century.

As in previous years, representatives from the art world, including commissioners, artists, cinema programmers and galleries curators, are being invited to suggest potential recipients of the 2011 Award. Any mid-career artist film-maker, whose work embraces the spirit and the legacy of Jarman's highly experimental and risk-taking approach can be put forward for this annual prize.

A Jarman Award national tour of events and screenings profiling the shortlisted artists will take place in the run up to the announcement of this year's winner.

Extracts from Luke Fowler's Award commissioned films can be viewed on the Channel 4 website, here. And more information on Lindsay Seer's commissioned films can be found here. Emily Wardill's commission will be premiered on Channel 4 later this year.
