On Screen

First up is gangster drama The Gentlemen, directed by Guy Ritchie, which opened in cinemas New Year’s Day. With a star-studded cast including Matthew McConaughey, Hugh Grant and Colin Farrell, the film follows Mickey Pearson, a drug lord who tries to sell off his empire in London to a dynasty of Oklahoma billionaires. Filming took place all over the capital, from Mayfair to Emirates Stadium, Bethnal Green to Billingsgate Fish Market!

Also out in cinemas is Sam Mendes’ award-wining war epic 1917. Set during the First World War, two young British soldiers played by George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman, are ordered to deliver a message in enemy territory to stop 1,600 men – one being a relative- from walking straight into a deadly trap. Made to look like one continuous take, the stages and back-lot facilities at Shepperton Studios helped facilitate filming.

Opening the 63rd BFI London Film Festival back in October 2019, The Personal History of David Copperfield directed by Armando Iannucci will finally hit cinema screens at the end of this month. Based on the novel by Charles Dickens, the film follows the eponymous character on his journey from childhood to maturity, with filming taking place on location at Temple, Clapham and Wapping.

Also directed by Armando Iannucci, but this time for TV, is Avenue 5. A sci-fi comedy about the fictional space tourism industry, Captain Ryan Clark tries to control his crew, navigate the Avenue 5 spaceship back to Earth and ensure that not too many passengers die along the way…. Production took place at both Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, and Printworks.

Filming

Starting production here in London this month is feature Operation Mincemeat starring Colin Firth and Matthew Macfadyen. Based on the true Second World War story of a deception operation from two British intelligence officers to distract the Germans from the D-Day invasion plans.
