Presented by Portland Green Cultural Projects, FLAMIN and the Hayward Gallery, ALFF (artists' long format film) is the working abbreviation for a commission for a film in any genre; creative documentary, drama, artists' film, cinematic essay or animation, which uses dance/performance as a driver.

The commission is inspired by the recent critical successes of artists' long format films which have clearly demonstrated the range of contemporary performance styles that can be used effectively in long format films and still attract a mainstream audience.

THE PARTNERS

This is a call for proposals, from an artist/film maker with a view to them entering into a collaborative production partnership that will lead to a strong film, being produced for a highly competitive marketplace.  The Partners, Portland Green Cultural Projects, Film London and the Hayward Gallery are committed to facilitating a major new moving image work that explores this area of practice. This is not a production award, rather, it is a vehicle from which to finance, produce and distribute a long form film.

The partners will work in a variety of ways:

• Film London will administer the call for proposals, and will provide development and production support and advice drawing on both the organisations' film and artists' moving image knowledge and expertise and its expertise in independent narrative film
• The Hayward Gallery will collaborate on promoting the project and the future aim is for for the film to be presented at the Hayward Gallery as part of its overall distribution strategy.
• PORTLAND GREEN will take a lead on the production process, producing this new work in collaboration with the other partners

Financing is an integral element to the support available for this production.  A significant portion of the funding can be sourced through existing funds available to the co-producers (depending on the scale, nature of and requirements of the project). Additional finance will then be raised or released by the partners according to the project selected.



WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

• We are looking for a quality, original idea that will appeal to a large audience and be delivered as a long format film by the full range of creative talent in both film and dance/performance that is available in the UK and beyond. We envisage the commissioned film-maker/s as being willing to explore the boundaries within the chosen film genre and its relationship to the intrinsic qualities of dance and/or performance within film.
• We are looking for exciting, feasible proposals that can be made with a development and production budget of between approximately £120K and £400K.
• We are looking for projects from artists and film makers who demonstrate the ability to conceive and deliver an extremely strong film, for a highly competitive marketplace.
  
  
  The partners are committed to supporting the widest reach for the film in terms of distribution.  The future aim is for the film to be presented at the Hayward Gallery, however in addition all possible and applicable distribution outlets can be explored including broadcast and theatrical release.  To ensure that the business affairs for the film are optimally negotiated Portland Green Cultural Projects have retained Industry Media to work with the production.
  
  

ELIGIBILITY

Full time students are not eligible to apply.

 

• Films where none of the artists or film-makers are a resident of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland or Wales are not eligible.
• Applicants must complete all questions on the application form.
• The applicant must be available for interview during the week of 12 March 2012
• You must own the rights to your idea.
• Recording (documentation) of an event or performance are not eligible.
• Community or education film projects are not eligible

THE SUBMISSION PROCESS

This is a Call for Proposals not a production award. We aim to make the 'call' as transparent as possible.

You must fully complete each question on the online application form.  We will ask you to submit a treatment, and budget information, and will interested in the following detail:

• An outline of the subject, structure and visual approach to the film
• The rationale behind this project
• A draft production schedule for the film
• The context in which you situate the film, in terms of audiences
• Detail of any collaborators confirmed at this stage, including performers, other cast, production team and crew.  Please provide CVs for any key team members
• What is the estimated budget for the development and production of the film
• If your project is in development or pre-production, please let us know of any financial supporters and their rights
• Do not submit additional materials to Film London or any of the partners unless specifically requested.
• All submissions will be acknowledged.
• Submissions are assessed by an Advisory Selection Panel which includes the co-production partners.

 

You will be notified by 16 March 2012 if we are taking your proposal forward. We cannot give any feedback about our decision.

If we take your proposal to the next stage we will arrange a meeting with you. The meeting is an opportunity for us to discuss your proposal and for you to ask us any questions you may have. The key people from your creative team should attend the meeting. You will have the opportunity to explain why you want to make the film and to outline your ideas in more detail. We will have questions about the proposal and may ask you to develop some of your ideas further or address aspects of the production. It is important to understand that this meeting does not mean there is a commitment to your film at that point.

There will be further discussions between partners and the partners' Production Accountant will review the film's budget.
