Dickens in London

As part of Dickens 2012, Film London, BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio Drama worked together to commission five films and five radio plays, collectively titled Dickens In London.
Artist film-maker Chris Newby was commissioned to produce five new short films to accompany five original radio plays written by Michael Eaton. The films, which were commissioned by FLAMIN and produced by Dan Films with funding from Arts Council England, premiered at BFI Southbank on Tuesday 7 February 2012 at a special event celebrating the anniversary of Dickens's birth.
The five radio plays and five films were broadcast simultaneously during the week of 6-10 February 2012 in the Woman's Hour Drama strand on Radio 4 and were subsequently made available to view online and via Red Button.
Newby's films combine animation, puppetry and contemporary footage to visualise five original radio plays written by Michael Eaton. Each radio play forms the soundtrack for the five films and features the voices of Samuel Barnett, Alex Jennings and Antony Sher, who each take their turn to play Dickens, and original music is composed by Neil Brand.
Dickens in London was commissioned as part of Dickens 2012, an international celebration of the cultural and educational significance of the life and work of Charles Dickens to mark the bicentenary of his birth, co-ordinated by the Charles Dickens Museum and Film London in association with the Dickens Fellowship.
Dickens in London was commissioned by Film London Artists' Moving Image Network with funding from Arts Council England and continues the successful and ongoing partnership between Film London and BBC Radio Drama, established with 'The City Speaks' commission, broadcast in 2008.
