Synopsis

The voice of a Gambian woman, Salingding, tells the remarkable story of her family history and her sixteen-month journey across 3000 miles of West Africa.

Deadline's narrative is neither wholly based on fact nor purely imagined, an amalgamation of stories from several different individuals living in a Gambian fishing village; a mixture of local folklore and actual histories.

The imagery itself alludes to various aspects of the monologue and is imbued with a kind of hypnotic quality through the use of slow, but often very extended, camera movements. Multi coloured snake-like bodies move slowly across the screen and a glass rabbit drops blood, upwards, from its head.

Project Background

One of the largest publicly funded award programmes for artists in the UK, the London Artists' Film and Video Awards (LAFVA) scheme offered awards of up to £20,000 for production of artists' moving image work.

From 2000 to 2008 the scheme supported London-based artists working in the context of contemporary moving image practice - producing work intended for exhibition in galleries, festivals, specialist venues and as site specific installations.
